How to calculate tile adhesive (and primer)

Updated: 31 August 2026

Adhesive and primer follow the area after openings, plus your order allowance: about 4.5 kg/m² and 0.2 L/m². Buy whole bags from that figure.

Tile adhesive is sold in bags. Guessing “three bags for the flat” is how leftovers pile up — or how you run out mid-wall.

What the planner actually multiplies

The material list does not glue on net-only field.

  1. Net area — wall or floor after windows, doors, hatches, and other openings.
  2. Gross tiled area — that net × (1 + your order allowance). Same gross used for box counts.
  3. Adhesive — 4.5 kg/m² on that gross, shown as kg and 25 kg bags (estimate).
  4. Primer — 0.2 L/m² on the same gross.

Layout pattern (diagonal vs straight) changes cuts, not this adhesive rate. Allowance still sits on net after openings — it is not “ignore the windows.”

The 4.5 kg/m² and 0.2 L/m² figures are the planner’s estimate.

Steps

  1. Build the layout in the tiling planner with real sizes and openings, then set allowance.
  2. Open the on-screen material list — adhesive and primer sit next to the tile count, on gross.
  3. Round up to whole bags of the product you will buy.

That stops the mistake of buying without any area math.
